Our History:
The organization’s efforts have been made possible through the support of a small group of passionate and committed volunteers who helped incorporate the Spina Bifida Association of Iowa (SBAIA) in 1974. Thanks to the support of a small group of passionate and committed volunteers, an association was formed and nurtured as a result of their tireless efforts, as well as the support of a partnership with the Iowa State Snowmobile Association. Parents of spina bifida children started meeting monthly in September 1972 at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital to discuss their child’s care and experiences. Since its incorporation in 1974, the organization has been steadfast in advocacy and has grown through educational and community events, adaptive recreation opportunities, and financial assistance programs. The organization remains committed to building a better and brighter future for those impacted by this challenging birth defect.
Our Story:
2014, the SBAIA joined Spina Bifida Association (SBA) as an affiliated chapter. SBA has a presence in more than 125 communities nationwide and touches thousands of people each year. Since 1973, SBA has been the only national voluntary health agency solely dedicated to enhancing the lives of those directly and indirectly affected by Spina Bifida.
Our Vision:
Our goal every year is to provide assistance and build relationships with people affected by Spina Bifida and their families. Infancy Resources, & assistance through a range of programs which have included camp scholarships, family assistance, incontinence supply assistance, orthotic assistance, college scholarships, and wheelchair assistance.
Our Mission:
The mission of the Spina Bifida Association of Iowa is to build a better and brighter future for all those impacted by spina bifida. Our goal is to enhance the lives of those with spina bifida and those whose lives are touched by this challenging birth defect.
